Unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 87 and a maximum ethanol content of 10% is used in Westinghouse generators. Ethanol-free fuel is the best kind of fuel for a Westinghouse generator.

Observe every safety instruction listed in the Westinghouse operator’s manual. Always work on the generator in a space that has good ventilation. NEVER operate the generator inside due to the danger posed by gas fumes.

Choose the Right Gasoline for a Westinghouse Generator

Low Ethanol Content

An alternative fuel called ethanol is produced from high-starch plants like corn. To make gasoline more environmentally friendly, it is added.

It draws moisture to the fuel system naturally because it is plant-based. The varnish and gummy deposits that are left behind after the ethanol and water mixture evaporates can limit the amount of fuel that can be used and lead to component failure.

Always choose gasoline with an ethanol content no higher than 10% due to the detrimental effects ethanol has on the fuel system. Never use E15, E30, or E85 fuels. These fuels have ethanol content of up to 15%, 30%, and 85%.

Use Fresh Gasoline

In as little as 30 days after purchase, gasoline can start to degrade. It is best to limit your gasoline purchases to what you can use up in 30 days.

I am aware that it is simpler said than done. Only during blackouts are you permitted to use your generator. You can never predict when that will occur or how long you will be without power.

Add a fuel additive to stabilize the gas if you buy more gas than you can use in 30 days to extend the time before it degrades.

Add a Fuel Stabilizer

Like most homeowners, I don’t frequently use my portable generators. They come in handy for football tailgates and power outages. So I top off every tank of gas with a substance called Sea Foam Motor Treatment.

Sea Foam not only dehumidifies the air and cleans the fuel system, it also stabilizes gas for up to two years. It reduces issues that could arise from using stale fuel. STA-BIL is a good alternative to fuel additives.

Fresh gas needs to have fuel stabilizer added to it. It cannot undo the damage done by old gas. Drain the old fuel from a generator and replace it with new fuel that has stabilizer mixed in.

Ethanol-Free Fuel (Optional)

The damaging effects that ethanol has on the generator can be avoided by using an ethanol-free gas. While ethanol-free gas is recommended for use in your Westinghouse, it is also the priciest fuel option.

Some gas stations sell ethanol-free gasoline. It is marketed as REC-90, or recreation fuel. Additionally, it is available in canisters at your neighborhood hardware store or online, such as this 4-cycle fuel made by TruFuel.

It’s practical to keep the canisters on hand.

Tips for Purchasing and Storing Gas for Your Westinghouse Generator

A Westinghouse generator can have issues starting and running if the incorrect gas is used, or if the gas is old. When selecting and storing gas, remember to:

• Use only brand-new gas, and use it within 30 days.
• Use unleaded fuel with an octane rating of at least 87 and a maximum of 10% ethanol.
• If you are unable to consume gas within 30 days, add a fuel stabilizer.
• Keep gasoline away from combustible items in a dry, cool location.
