A hotel at the end of the world? In the midst of the arctic ice of the North Pole will open in April of 2020 (and for one month only) a pop-up luxury hotel with domes heated with glass ceilings from which to observe the starry sky and the spectacle of the aurora borealis. The price? Not for all
Ice, everywhere, only ice. And no structure that can accommodate travellers. Although the North Pole has become one of the most exclusive destinations in the world (it is reached every year by thousands of people), there are no accommodation facilities, pleasant and comfortable. Scientists, explorers, and some adventurer staying in the Russian base Barneo, the only refuge is present in the Arctic ocean. In short, however, in the midst of the arctic sea ice will be built the first hotel. Specifically, a “luxury camp”.

Ice hotel: here you can sleep under zero
Igloo-hotel at the North Pole, the perfect place to see the aurora borealis
In 2020, the travel company specialized in trips in the Arctic, the Finnish Luxury Adventures, plans to build a resort temporarily to the North Pole: ten igloos with glass ceilings from which to appreciate the view, but especially the night sky. Because of the climatic conditions of the place, the North Pole Igloos Hotel will be open only a month, in April, the single of the year in which the guests can reach the North Pole in safety. “The concept of this hotel is mobile, and sustainable, albeit still a bit extreme,” says Janne Honkanen of Luxury Adventures. Since Honkanen has opened a five-star hotel near Rovaniemi, the hometown “official” Santa Clausin the north of Finland, are more and more interested guests to the state in which is located the Arctic, explains the ceo. Its objective is to acquaint the travelers the rare ecosystem of the region, but also to raise awareness by highlighting how individual behaviours can affect climate change.
Igloo-hotel at the North Pole, hospitality to twenty persons
The Igloo-Hotel you can reach only by helicopter and can accommodate up to 20 people, in the event of hazardous conditions or adverse weather, may be evacuated at any time. And “all that will take you to the North Pole and then we will bring forth,” thus reducing to a minimum the environmental impact. At the end of the month, the buildings will be packed and returned to Spitsbergen. In the rest of the year will instead be placed on one of the glaciers of the Svalbard islands. The transparent igloos with toilets, say, from Luxury Adventures – have already passed the tests in the climatic conditions in the arctic – in winter, temperatures can drop to minus 45 degrees.
Igloo-hotel at the North Pole, the luxury and the alternatives
Here, in the middle of nowhere, there will also be a camp director, a nature guide, a cook and security personnel. Luxury Adventures wants to offer “an experience extraordinary, luxurious and safe.” The project, which has had a great echo in the international media, is very ambitious. The organization, however, has not revealed many details. For the moment it is known that in the package of the Igloo Hotel is included with a stay of two nights, in Slavbard before embarking on a flight to Spitzbergen. From here, a helicopter in two hours will lead guests in a first field of ice, where they will spend a night, and finally at the entrance of the property to the North Pole. A fascinating experience, but the price is definitely prohibitive: the cost of travel in the field in the arctic, which includes a night at the North Pole Igloos Hotel, two nights at the Svalbard islands, meals, guides, flights and logistics to and from the Polo from 95 thousand euro per person. Certainly more affordable and accessible (you can get there also by train) are the nights in the ice hotel built from snow and ice. Offer a view of the starry sky is equally spectacular.
